MY WEEKEND IN COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

…where I ate the best food while simultaneously draining my bank account
My weekend in Copenhagen was a great time filled with amazing people and the BEST food
ever. Before traveling to Copenhagen (CPH), my professor begrudgingly told me not to waste
my time or money on a city that didn’t have a lengthy political or religious history…he is my
political science professor, of course. We laughed it off as I exclaimed “I’ve heard really great
things!” and he ultimately accepted that. He truly wasn’t wrong in that CPH is very different
compared to Prague or Krakow with their intense and full history of wars, sovereignty, freedom
and incredible architecture linked to those events. I found a different experience in CPH that I
very much appreciated and would recommend to most.
Going into the trip I had heard it was on the pricier side, especially compared to Prague. I was
fully prepared to spend the money for the quality of food I received, that’s for sure. Our first
night took us to a recommended spot that was NOTHING short of perfection. We are still
talking about it and the meal was over two weeks ago. Magasasa had the best dumplings I have
ever tasted and I truly wish I had pictures to show, but we ate before we thought about
grabbing our phones. For that I am truly sorry..not sorry. It was located in the Meatpacking
District which we only ventured into on that first night. From what we were able to see, it had a
phenomenal array of restaurants and cool bars. If we had more time, we definitely would have
made our way there again.
I will be honest, we didn’t really have an itinerary going into this trip other than some
recommended spots and to ride bikes everywhere (which we definitely did). Our second day
was filled with lots of walking, shopping and stumbling upon cool museums and ice cream
donut shops…what could be better? The first thing we did was walk from our hostel (Urban
House, truly amazing) to Nyhavn to see the quintessential CPH tourist spot: the colorful houses
on the canal. They did not disappoint and I am very proud to say that – we definitely saw what
we came to see. Brunch was definitely the food highlight this day and The Union Kitchen was
the place. It was delicious and a great recommendation I am happy to further recommend. We
then we made our way to one of my personal favorite parts of our trip that I enjoyed way too
much: the trampolines. Yes, I said trampolines. As you walk along the water, you eventually
reach an area that has trampolines built into the sidewalk complete with a beautiful view of the
canal. It was everything I needed and more.
In terms of museums, we stumbled upon a free exhibit with amazing political art and a virtual
reality section that was extremely powerful. I am not sure if it is a permanent spot but it was
called CPH DOX and I highly recommend it. The ice cream donuts that everyone, and I mean
EVERYONE, needs to try is MILK. The picture speaks for itself and I am saddened that none of
you could taste it, but you’ll just have to go to CPH, SORRY.

An anomaly in CPH is Christiania and I can truly say I have never seen anything like it. It is the
free city that lives in the center of life in CPH. Look it up and you’ll be just as shocked as we
were to see this thriving yet virtually illegal city and all that it is comprised of.
We really took advantage of the Donkey Bikes on day three when we did most of our palace
and iconic buildings sightseeing. We started at Frederiskberg Gardens and the trees gave me
such Game of Thrones vibes, I was seriously living in a GOT moment. It was very beautiful and
the perfect spring like weather made it picture worthy (of course the phones came out). We
then rode our bikes back to Nyhavn where we found Amalienborg very close by. We even
arrived just in time to see the changing of the guard which is always a fun touristy thing to do
that for some reason everyone loves (including me).
Our meal of the day came highly recommended and was worth every calorie and penny. We
had phenomenal burgers at Cock’s and Cows, a real burger delicacy in CPH. After our extremely
filling meal, we went to what was definitely my favorite activity of the entire trip. We rented a
GoBoat and sailed around the canals for hours, drinking wine and enjoying great company. It
was a very inexpensive and easy thing to do that really showed us the city in a whole new light.
I could not recommend this more, I wish I was on that boat as I write this. We ended our night
at Hive…if you have been, you know how that ended.
CPH brought us so many laughs and great memories even if we did go home significantly more
broke than before and with a few extra few pounds under our belt (literally). I have learned
that travel is all about exploring new places where everyone ultimately comes away with their
own unique experience. Each city I visit is distinctly different and each time I return home to
Prague I realize how big this world is while being so tiny at the same time.
Like I always say, see the world, meet new people, take in each moment for what it is and
always be kind to others.
XOXO,
